Understanding Protein in a Healthy Diet

Speaker: Donald K. Layman, PhD, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Dr. Layman will provide insight about the past, present and future of protein in the American diet as dietary guidelines evolve from the Food Guide Pyramid to MyPlate. The presentation will examine the new research about optimum dietary protein for muscle health and performance and how new concepts about the optimum amount and quality of protein at each meal are re-shaping meal patterns. Rosa K Hand, MS, RDN, LD 

Rosa K Hand is the director of the Dietetics Practice Based Research Network at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Rosa is a registered dietitian nutritionist, holds a Masters and Bachelors of Science in Nutrition, and is pursuing a PhD in Clinical and Translational Science, all at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio. In her current role, Rosa conducts research in a variety of nutrition and dietetics topic areas including professional practice patterns, implementation of evidence-based guidelines and renal nutrition. 

Jenica Abram, MPH, RDN 

In her role as the ConAgra Foods Foundation Nutrition Education Research Fellow at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Jenica worked as a primary member of the project team responsible for the design and validation of the Guide for Effective Nutrition Interventions and Education (GENIE). 

SNEB Journal Club 7: Construct validity

Based on research from the JNEB article "Construct Validity of a Single-Item, Self-Rated Question of Diet Quality" - http://www.jneb.org/article/S1499-4046(14)00675-7/abstract 

Objectives: 

1. Identify the strengths, limitations, and applications of current measures of overall diet quality. 

2. Define construct validity in the context of survey questions. 

3. Evaluate the construct validity of a single-item, self-rated question of diet quality using self-reported and biomarker data. 

4. Provide additional example(s) of construct validity in epidemiological studies. 

Dr. Loftfield earned a BA in biology from Cornell University, an MPH in chronic disease epidemiology and global health from the Yale School of Public Health, and a PhD in Epidemiology from Yale University. While at Yale, Dr. Loftfield participated in the Epi Scholars Program at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene where she worked on the Heart Follow-Up Study and became interested in survey design and measures of dietary intake. She is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the National Cancer Institute where she studies the associations of dietary intake and biomarkers of dietary intake with cancer-related outcomes.
