SNEB Journal Club 2: Test-retest correlations; construct validity
Monday Oct 05, 2015
Monday Oct 05, 2015
presented by Patricia Markham Risica, DrPH, RD
Based on research from the JNEB article "Assessing Fat-related Dietary
Behaviors among Black Women: Reliability and Validity of a New Food Habits
Questionnaire"
http://www.jneb.org/article/S1499-4046(07)00118-2/abstract
At the completion of the webinar participants will:
be able to describe the steps for demonstrating reliability of an instrument
and one example based in nutrition assessment
be able to describe the steps for demonstrating validity of an instrument and
one example based in nutrition assessment
be able to identify characteristics of construct validity and one example based
in nutrition assessment
Patricia Markham Risica, DrPH, RD is a nutritional epidemiologist with the
Institute for Community Health Promotion and Department of Epidemiology at the
Brown University School of Public Health. Early in her career, Dr. Risica
served as a nutrition support dietitian for five years at University of
Maryland Hospital before completing her MPH and DrPH at the Johns Hopkins
University Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her doctoral training included
traveling to rural Alaska, where Dr. Risica collected dietary data
house-to-house. Since that time, Dr. Risica and her team at Brown have created
at tested community-based public health interventions. Dr. Risica specializes
in data collection and assessment for evaluation of programs and interventions.

SNEB Journal Club 1: Face and Content Validity, Cognitive Interviews with Children, and Measurement Sensitivity
(recorded Monday, September 28, 2015)
presented by Leslie Cunningham-Sabo, PhD, RD
From the JNEB article "Validation of a Group-administered Pictorial Dietary Recall with 9- to 11-year-old Children"http://www.jneb.org/article/S1499-4046(10)00002-3/abstract
At the end of this webinar attendees will be able to:
• Describe at least 3 challenges researchers face when developing valid measures of child dietary intake
• Distinguish the definitions and processes to measure face and content validity
• Identify the purpose and effective strategies for conducting cognitive interviews with children
• Describe at least 1 strategy to assess the sensitivity of an instrument to measure real change
Leslie Cunningham-Sabo has led federally-funded school- and community-based nutrition intervention research projects for more than 20 years, more recently using a community-based participatory research approach. She has spent considerable time working effectively with diverse populations (American Indian and Hispanic) in both rural and urban school districts and communities to design, implement, and evaluate nutrition and physical activity programs for both children and adults. She has expertise in the development of nutrition and food choice assessment tools.

Weighing In: High Quality Protein for Weight Management
Description
A growing body of research demonstrates the benefits of higher protein diets (combined with negative energy balance) in weight management, for satiety, reduced energy intake, fat loss and muscle preservation. Consumers need help identifying foods with higher quality protein so that they may incorporate these choices into their diets to meet healthier lifestyle goals.
An overview of the current body of science on protein and weight management will be reviewed, and practical tips and ideas to help bring the research to life will be shared. Special attention will be placed on differences in protein quality, recommendations for protein quantity, and the importance of timing protein intake properly to maximize the benefits for weight management. Webinar sponsored by the National Dairy Council.
Learning Objectives:
- Translate the latest science examining the role of protein on weight management and its related benefits (satiety, fat loss and/or muscle preservation).
- Educate peers and the public on the importance of protein timing and distribution as well as high quality, higher protein diets for maintaining a healthy weight and an active lifestyle over time.
- Identify and apply practical solutions to help patients/clients determine appropriate protein quantity and methods for optimizing timing of protein intake, and advise them on how the integration of protein can help support the benefits of regular physical activity.
- Build patient tips and menu plans focused on improving satiety between meals and throughout the day, recommending quantities and optimal timing for protein consumption.
